VOLUNTEER COACH REGISTRATION

A reminder that we need all of our volunteer coaches to register! If this is a step you have skipped in years past, it must be completed this year in order to coach. You can indicate which league you will be coaching and who you would like to have as your coaching partner. If you are new to SPYBAS or did not fill out a background check last year you WILL need to do so before you are considered for coaching. If you filled one out last year – you WILL NOT need to fill one out this year. (Reminder – there are lots of notes under our Registration tab as it pertains to Coaching Registration.)

Note to Coaches – Directors will reach out to you prior to Evaluations to let you know of your coaching assignment. They will also let you know Draft times, but know for planning purposes - they are always the day following the Evaluation.

SPYBAS LEAGUE BASEBALL BAT REQUIREMENTS

All bats for Rookies, Minors and Majors Baseball Leagues need to be USA stamped bats. (Image included at the bottom of this email.) Softball bats need to be a softball bat (not baseball).

PEE WEES/ROOKIES BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL

There are no evaluations for these levels. Teams will be determined and communicated by April 28th. Directors for these leagues will reach out to share dates/times for Coaches’ Meetings.

JUNIORS SOFTBALL

We will communicate more info about Juniors Softball Evaluations as we get closer to registration closing and have a better idea of how many players we will have.

PICTURE DAY – MARK YOUR CALENDARS

Wednesday, May 15th is Picture day for all Pee Wees through Juniors teams!

All teams will have the night off of playing in order to make it to Central Heights at their designated time to get their picture taken. This is not a fundraiser for SPYBAS – rather a chance to get individual and team photos taken to preserve the great memories that SPYBAS offers each year! Sibling photos are also an option! More details to follow as we get closer to the date!

JANUARY UPDATE 2024

Happy New Year! We are looking forward to a fun 2024 season that is just around the corner! There are LOTS of notes and reminders in this email! (One quick note for folks that are new to SPYBAS – at spybas.com if you scroll down on the Home page OR click directly on the Registration tab you will see a FAQ section that answers many questions you may have.)

Registration is open for Baseball on the
spybas.com webpage. Softball Registration will be open soon!

LEAGUE REGISTRATION

NOTE – SPYBAS is transitioning away from Grade to Birthdate cutoffs for our Rookies, Minors, Majors and Juniors Leagues for the 2024 season.

Steps to Register for League

1) Visit spybas.com

2) Click on Registration along the top banner.

3) Then click either the Baseball Registration or Softball Registration tab along the 2nd banner from the top. (PLEASE pay careful attention that you are registering your player for the correct sport. We have had a number of baseball players registered for softball and vice versa. We cannot change registrations on our end – so when this happens we have to cancel the registration and families then have to re-register.)

4) Fill out the Registration information.

Baseball Divisions

Pee Wees: 4K & Kindergarten as of 1/1/24

Rookies: Birth Date from 5/1/15 - 8/31/17 (Typically 8U Travel)

Minors: Birth Date from 5/1/13 - 8/31/15 (Typically 9U & 10U Travel)

Majors: Birth Date from 5/1/11 - 8/31/13 (Typically 11U & 12U Travel)

Juniors: Birth Date from 5/1/09 - 8/31/11 (Typically 13U & 14U - NO 9th graders)

Softball Divisions

SPYBAS is aligning our league with the USA Softball League’s birth dates to provide a consistent playing experience across league and tournament play. We know this is a new change for our Softball players – and may require a player to be in the same league for a 3rd year. If your player’s birthdate falls into a 3rd year in a league and they want to move into the next league - please register your player in the league where their birthdate falls and then send us an email requesting that your 3rd year player move into the next league. We will make the change on our end. If you have any questions about registration, please contact SPYBAS at spyouthbbsb@gmail.com

Rookies: Birth date from 9/1/14 to 12/31/17

Minors: Birth date from 9/1/12 to 12/31/14 (Typically 10U Travel)

Majors: Birth date from 9/1/10 to 12/31/12 (Typically 12U Travel)

Juniors: Birth date from 9/1/06 to 12/31/10 (Typically 14U/16U Travel)

All players must be registered separately. It may give you the option to “add another player” but we are working to take this off as an option because it will only allow you to register another player for that same division – SO, Please register each player separately.

If you are registering more than one player in your family, you will receive a 50% discount on the 3rd + all additional children registration fee. Please register your players separately and contact us at spyouthbbsb@gmail.com in order for us to process your refund.

For the 2024 season, these are the days of the week that Leagues will “probably” play. (We cannot guarantee these days yet, but this is the goal)

Pee Wees – Mondays/Fridays (1 game per week)

Rookies Baseball – Mondays/Wednesdays/Fridays (1-2 games per week)

VOLUNTEER COACH REGISTRATION

A reminder that we need all of our volunteer coaches to register! If this is a step you have skipped in years past, it must be completed this year in order to coach. You can indicate which league you will be coaching and who you would like to have as your coaching partner. If you are new to SPYBAS or did not fill out a background check last year you WILL need to do so before you are considered for coaching. If you filled one out last year – you WILL NOT need to fill one out this year.

 Steps to Register for Coaching

1) Visit spybas.com

2) Click on the Coaching Registration tab along the 2nd banner from the top.

3) Fill out the registration information.

4) NOTE – there is a spot within the registration that takes you to the Background Check. If you pause SPYBAS Coaching Registration to do the background check – PLEASE remember to go back and finish the coaching registration. This is a step that was missed by several last year.

5) NOTE – there are TWO parts to the background check. You need to fill out the information to have the check completed. Then you will receive an email link to a training video along with a 25 question quiz. This needs to be completed in order for your background check to be processed.

 6) NOTE – if you want to coach more than one team you need to fill out a coaching registration for each division. You only need to complete the background check one time for this season.

Also – a reminder that we appoint 2 coaches for each Minors/Majors/Juniors team. We appoint 4 coaches for each Pee Wees/Rookies team. Once registration closes we will reach out to you and confirm your status of coaching.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT LEAGUE BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL

We had hoped people would see this on our Registration page but it seems that is not happening. We have re-located to our Home Page so it is very easily accessed!

How much does it cost?  League fees for Baseball and Softball are $275 per season for Rookies/Minors/Majors/Juniors Softball. Pee Wees baseball is $125 per season due to fewer games. Juniors Baseball is $300.(Updated Jan. 2023)

I need to register more than one player, can I register them all at once, or do I need to register each one seperately? You will need to register each player seperately.

Can siblings be on the same Team? Yes, siblings can be on the same Team as long as the meet the age/grade requirements for that level of play.

How are Teams determined? I'd like have my player be on a Team with their friends, can I ask for something like this? Because most of our league teams are drafted by coaches we do not take requests for kids being on the same team. If up to 4 coaches volunteer to coach together at the Rookies level then those 4 kids will be guaranteed to be on the same team. If up to 2 coaches volunteer to coach together at Minors/Majors/Juniors levels then those 2 kids will be guaranteed to be on the same team.

When does the season typically start and end? Practices begin late April (weather permitting), games begin mid May and go through late July.

Where are games played? Games for Pee Wees through Majors Baseball and Softball are mostly played at the SPYBAS complex on Bird St. or at the 3 Sheehan Park fields on Linnerud Dr.  Juniors Baseball and Softball Home games are played at East and/or West High Schools with some travel for Away games to local communities.

What nights will my kids play? **We do not know which nights which leagues will play until our registrations are completed and we know how many teams we will have across our 9 leagues. We can tell you that most games are Monday through Friday nights at 5:00 or 6:30 pm. If we run into very rainy seasons sometimes we need to make up games on Sunday afternoons.

**For the 2024 season, these are the days of the week that Leagues will “probably” play. (We cannot guarantee these days yet, but this is the goal)

Pee Wees – Mondays/Fridays (1 game per week)

Rookies Baseball – Mondays/Wednesdays/Fridays (1-2 games per week)

Minors Baseball – Mondays/Wednesdays (1-2 games per week)

Majors Baseball – Tuesdays/Thursdays (1-2 games per week)

Rookies Softball – Mondays/Wednesdays/Fridays (1-2 games per week)

Minors Softball – Tuesdays/Thursdays (1-2 games per week)

Majors Softball – Tuesdays/Thursdays (possible Wednesdays early in the season) (1-2 games per week)

Juniors Baseball and Softball is dependent on the out side leagues these teams play in.

Do I have to tryout to make a team? No. Every player that registers will play on a Team.  There is however a skills evaluation that players go through prior to play for Minors, Majors, and Juniors Baseball and Softball level of play. This helps to attempt to fill out Rosters with the appropriate level of skills on each Team.

How many games are played each week? Typically (2) games are scheduled per week for all levels except Pee Wee Baseball which gets (1) game per week.

How many practices a week are there? Team Head Coaches set practice schedules for their teams. A guideline of scheduling about (1) practice per week is asked of the Head Coaches.

Do I need to get the registration insurance in case the season is cancelled? If the season is cancelled due to COVID fees will be automatically refunded. The insurance is for other reasons - i.e. you register your child and we have a season but your child decides not to play.

What is the "grade" I am supposed to enter? Pee Wees is the only league that will require grade registration. Please enter the grade your player(s) is in currently.

What gear does my player need?

All Pee Wees, Rookies, Minors and Majors baseball players receive a hat and a jersey.

All Rookies, Minors and Majors softball players receive a visor and a jersey.

Pee Wees need their own mitt. Each team gets a couple helmets to share but most kids have their own.

Rookies, Minors and Majors baseball players all need their own mitt. Most kids this age have their own helmet but each team has access to some if needed. Kids should wear baseball pants (most wear white or gray). Most kids at this level wear plastic cleats. Lots of kids have their own bats (MUST BE USA) but kids share them as needed.

Rookies, Minors and Majors Softball players need their own mitt. Most girls have their own helmet but each team has access to a few as needed. If you purchase your own it needs to have a cage on it. Girls will also need a metal cage mask for fielding. Most girls wear plastic cleats. Girls should wear pants (most wear black). Lots of kids have their own bats but kids share them as needed.

Juniors Baseball and Juniors Softball players will receive a pair of pants, 2 jerseys and a hat (Baseball) or visor (Softball). They need cleats (can be metal), mitts, helmets and bats (Baseball see Badgerland chart for Bat rules). Softball also recommends/needs metal cage mask for fielding.

What happens if it rains? SPYBAS will send out a Communication (email or other) by 3:00 the day of games to let Parents know of a cancellation. Rainouts are rescheduled if a Team will not play (XX) games in a given season.

If I have a concern, who do I contact to have it addressed?  SPYBAS takes concerns very seriously over Coach and Umpire conduct. Please contact our Board of Directors through our spyouthbbsb@gmail.com account with any concerns that you may have.
